Thailand 18th for expats

Taiwan has been voted top Expat Destination 2016, while Thailand’s position has dropped from seventh to 18th, according to the online Expat Insider survey.

Conducted by InterNations, a global expat network founded in 2007 in Munich, the survey had 14,000 respondents representing 174 nationalities and 191 countries or territories. The participants were asked to rate their satisfaction of 43 different aspects of life abroad including quality of life, ease of settling in, family life and working abroad.

Taiwan has ousted two-time champion Ecuador to win the first place out of 67 countries in the overall ranking this year. According to the survey, Taiwan holds first place in quality of life and personal finance, impressing with the quality and affordability of its healthcare and the enviable financial situation of expats living there.

Second place is occupied by Malta, followed by Ecuador, Mexico, New Zealand, Costa Rica, Australia, Austria, Luxembourg and Czech Republic. The bottom 10 countries, on the other hands, are Kuwait, Greece, Nigeria, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Mozambique, Qatar, Italy and Tanzania.

Thailand dropped 11 positions from last year, from seventh to 18th. One of the reasons is the lesser scores on quality of life, including drops in personal happiness, travel and transport, and safety and security. However, expats give better scores for Thailand in leisure options (13th) and quality of medical care (9th).

For the Ease of Settling In category, Thailand is now 30th, down from 26th last year due to lower scores on feeling welcome, friendliness and finding friends.

In the category of Working Abroad, Thailand is in 37th, having dropped from 24th in the 2015 survey.

However, Thailand has improved its position for expat family life. The position is up to 20th this year from 26th. The reason is better childcare and education.

Expats are also satisfied with their financial situation in the Kingdom, as determined by cost of living, affordability and availability of housing.
