BANGKOK, 24 September 2016 (NNT) – The government has pushed for the accommodation of air traffic and proactive promotion of tourism.

In his weekly televised address, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said that the second-phase expansion of Suvarnabhumi international airport will boost air travel capacity, improve facilities to cope with the growing aviation and tourism sectors and promote Thailand as an aviation hub in the ASEAN region.

The expansion is expected to be completed in 2019 and the airport will have increased its capacity from 45 million to 60 million passengers per year, he said.

The expansion includes the construction of a passenger terminal in the east side of the airport, a new aircraft parking facility and airport infrastructure, he said.

He said that Phuket international airport’s new passenger terminal will effectively increase its annual capacity from 6.5 million to 12.5 million passengers and the new terminal is part of its plan to accommodate the increased air traffic.

He added that Don Muang airport, Chiang Rai airport, Hat Yai airport and U-tapao airport are yet to be developed as well.
