NLA president Pornpetch Wichitcholchai was granted an audience with the Crown Prince at Ambara Villa, Dusit Palace, the place where he was born, to invite him to ascend to the throne as the 10th King of the Chakri Dynasty. He is to be known as His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun.
Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, as the regent, led the heads of the three executive bodies into the audience. They were Mr Pornpeth, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Supreme Court president Veerapol Tungsuwan.
The audience came after the NLA’s acknowledgment in a special session on Tuesday of a request to invite the Crown Prince to be the King. The NLA held the meeting shortly after the cabinet and the National Council for Peace and Order initiated royal succession proceedings earlier in the day
His Majesty the King succeeds King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who passed away on Oct 13.
The King was born on July 28, 1952 at Ambara Villa. He received his early education at Chitralada School, followed by Millfield School in Somerset, Britain, and The King’s School in Sydney, Australia.
His formal education was followed by military training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, in Canberra, Australia.
He was proclaimed according to a centuries-old tradition in the stately Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall as the Crown Prince on Dec 28, 1972.
The Coronation Day for His Majesty has not been set. It is expected to be later next year after the royal cremation of King Bhumibol.
With the formalities complete, His Royal Highness said: “I accept [the invitation to be king] and to fulfil the royal intentions [of the late King] for the benefit and happiness of all Thais.”
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha announced the completion of the formalities on the TV pool. “Thailand now has a new King,” he said.
