Constitution approval means ‘megaprojects’ can move forward

The tentative passing of the new constitution means that almost 20 of the junta’s “megaprojects,” with a total cost of THB1.4 trillion, will be able to move ahead.

Eleven of those are slated to be completed by 2022 as part of a plan to encourage economic growth in Thailand.

The government’s big infrastructure projects should be approved soon and THB60 billion should go toward the projects this year. The rest will be allocated in the next three years.

According to the Bangkok Post, the cabinet approved 11 projects already and should be able to attach contractors to most of the projects before the end of the year.

The projects include an expansion of Laem Chabang port that would allow container shipping and receiving, further extension of Suvarnabhumi Airport and three new city transit line in Bangkok. The proposed Pink Line from Kae Rai to Min Buri, a Yellow Line from Lat Phrao to Samrong and an Orange Line from the Thailand Cultural Center to Min Buri.

Projects outside of Bangkok include the development of high-speed trains from  Bangkok to Rayong, Bangkok to Hua Hin and rail tracks connecting Thailand to Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar.
